PUBLIC
SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS (PSAs) For TV & Radio
Public Service Announcements are an effective and economical means
for delivering the message of a not-for-profit organization or
a corporate sponsored goodwill message. Also known as a public
service ad, PSAs are a type of advertisement featured on television
and radio. The difference is that the objective of a standard
advertisement for TV or radio is to market a product, but a PSA
is intended to change the public interest by drawing attention
to an issue, and encouraging a positive action as a result.
The National Association of Broadcasting has indicated that their
member stations contribute an estimated $10 billion in free time
for various public causes annually. Although stations have never
been mandated by the FCC to use a specified number of PSAs, stations
are required to prove they broadcast in the public interest. PSAs
are one way they meet that requirement.
Almost
any message can be adapted into a successful PSA with the right
creative approach including health and fitness, charitable causes,
medical awareness, lifestyle, travel & hospitality, and many
more. The most common topics for PSAs are health and safety and
typically, a PSA is part of a public awareness campaign to educate
and inform the public about various issues like mental health
awareness, alcohol or drug addiction, and charitable organizations.
